Ans: 1. Density is defined as the weight of unit volume of a substance. Hence it tells us how closely the molecules of the substance are packed. The greater the density, the more closely the molecules are packed. If the object is denser than water, it sinks in water. If it is less dense, it floats.

Ans: 2. Archimedes’ principle states that when an object is immersed in water, the upthrust is equal to the weight of water displaced by the object.

According to the Archimedes’ principle, the rules for floating and sinking are:
